Tax Scam Targeting Preparers Tricks Clients with Fraudulent Returns

Financial criminals are developing new methods to scam the average citizen regularly, which makes it increasingly more important to protect your personal records with vigilance.  In this CBS News release from April 12, 2018, there is a new scam detailed where the criminal finds copies returns from previous years, then use that information to file new fraudulent returns on unsuspecting victims. After the refund is deposited to the victim’s bank account, the criminal will pose as a debt collectors for the IRS and follow up with a phone call claiming the refund was an error, then directing you to a fraudulent website to return the money.
